History of Silk
To get the most out of the
silk experience, it helps to know a little about its exotic origins.
Silk has a fascinating
history, which dates back to 2600 BC.
China is the traditional
home of silk, where it appears that Yuen Fei, the concubine of an Emperor
was the first to reel a cocoon of silk. The Chinese people worshipped Yuen
Fei as the goddess of silk worms, jealously guarding the secret of silk
for many centuries.
However, Marco Polo’s
journeys into China developed an increasing trade in silk between east and
west. Caravans of Traders carried precious silks, worth their weight in
gold, along the Silk Road, across the deserts of Asia minor to Persia and
Europe.
Modern silk merchants
transport China silks across the world, and silk remains relatively rare,
in comparison to other natural and man made fibres. Family companies of
silk traders pass on secrets from generation to generation, thus
continuing the rich traditions which form an intricate part of the history
of silk and add to its appeal.
